Bob Montagné, "Bob the gambler" (Bob le flambeur), protagonist of the 1956 film of the same name by Jean-Pierre Melville —one of the founding cornerstones of French film noir—, is a veteran gambler and former thief of Parisian Montmartre: elegant, gray-haired, respected by police and criminals alike. Broke and tempted by one last big score, Bob plans the heist of the Deauville casino. And what makes him a fascinating character for CPTED is not the audacity, but the method: Bob does not improvise. He studies the casino the way an engineer studies a structure —the position of every camera, the number and rounds of each guard, the exact reaction times, the moment of the night when the safe holds the most money, the entry and escape routes—. CPTED applied to a high-value target —a bank, a casino, a museum— consists of a systematic analysis of security: mapping every camera and its blind spots, timing the guards' response times, identifying flows of people, locating the moments of maximum vulnerability, tracing how an intruder would get in and out. Bob Montagné does literally that same analysis, with the sole difference that his conclusion is not "this needs reinforcing" but "this is where to strike." Bob illustrates CPTED's most powerful methodological tool: adversary modeling. To truly protect a space it is not enough to install measures and trust them; you have to sit down, as Bob sits down, and plan the heist yourself, with all the rigor of someone about to carry it out. Where are the cameras and what do they not see? How long does a guard take to arrive from his round? When is there the most value and the least surveillance? How do you get in and, above all, how do you get out? Every question a thief like Bob asks in order to attack is a question the designer must ask in order to defend. This exercise —"walking through the crime before it happens"— reveals vulnerabilities no superficial inspection detects: the badly oriented camera, the predictable round, the forgotten service door, the window of time when everything is unattended. CPTED turns that modeling into method: instead of waiting to be robbed to discover its flaws, intelligent security discovers them by simulating the heist. The film's masterful irony is that Bob, the perfect planner, is also a compulsive gambler —"le flambeur," the one who bets heavily—. And his flawless plan ends up derailing over the one element no blueprint controls: luck and the human factor (a leak, an arrest, and Bob himself distracted by the roulette wheel at the decisive moment). That tension between meticulous calculation and uncontrollable chance is a fine lesson for CPTED: however methodical the adversary, and however well designed the defense, there always remains a margin of unpredictability —the guard who acts differently that day, the fluke that ruins the perfect plan—. Security cannot eliminate chance, but it can be designed so that chance plays in its favor: more layers, more human presence, more uncertainty for the attacker mean more opportunities for something to go wrong for him. The flaw Bob reveals is twofold. On the attacker's side, his story warns against the arrogance of the perfect blueprint: believing that analysis controls everything, forgetting the chance and the human factor that end up sinking him. On the defender's side, the lesson is symmetrical: however exhaustive a security audit, it cannot promise inviolability, because it too operates on a world with chance in it. But the opposite flaw would be the worst reading: to conclude that, since no blueprint is perfect, planning is not worth the trouble. It is precisely the reverse.
