There is an intuition as old as it is popular: that violence is a matter of hormones, that certain men «have too much testosterone» and that is why they hit, dominate and lay waste. Criminal endocrinology —the study of the role of hormones in aggression and antisocial behavior— takes that intuition and submits it to the laboratory. Its result is fascinating precisely because it dismantles the cliché: yes, there is a relationship between testosterone and aggressive behavior, but not the one common sense imagines. The hormone does not «cause» crime; it is associated above all with the pursuit of dominance and status, the relationship is correlational and bidirectional, its effect is small and depends entirely on the social context. Understanding that difference is understanding why biology can tip the scales without ever deciding the game.

The field has a name of its own: James M. Dabbs, a psychologist at Georgia State University who devoted his career to measuring testosterone in saliva and cross-referencing it with behavior. In a series of famous studies in the 90s, Dabbs measured the hormone levels of hundreds of inmates and found a pattern: prisoners with higher testosterone tended to have committed more violent crimes, to break prison rules more often and to project more dominance. In the general population he found the same pattern, attenuated: men with high levels appeared more frequently in risky and confrontational professions, more divorces, more antisocial behavior. Dabbs summarized his work in a popular book, Heroes, Rogues and Lovers: Testosterone and Behavior (2000), whose very title already contains the decisive nuance: the same hormone that pushes the «villain» also pushes the «hero» and the «lover». It is not a molecule of evil; it is a molecule of drive.
Dabbs was joined by the work of sociologist Alan Booth, who with him and others showed how testosterone relates to marital instability, leadership and competition, and above all how that relationship is modulated by the environment: a high level in a stable environment with consolidated status is not the same as one in a context of precariousness and constant provocation. Thus one moved from pure biology to a biosocial model, much more faithful to the data. And from comparative biology came the piece that ordered the whole picture: the challenge hypothesis of John Wingfield.
// The theoryThe challenge hypothesis: a hormone of status, not of blood
John Wingfield, studying birds in 1990, observed that males’ testosterone levels did not remain fixed: they rose right when there was a need to compete for territory or rank —a rival, a challenge— and fell in seasons of breeding and cooperation. Thus was born the «challenge hypothesis»: testosterone is not designed to produce gratuitous aggression, but to mobilize dominance behavior when status is at stake. Transferred to human beings, it reorders the whole field. What the hormone pushes is not «to kill», but to win rank; physical aggression is only one of the paths —and often the least effective— to achieve it. An aggressive executive in a negotiation, an elite athlete, a leader who imposes himself: all of them may be surfing the same hormonal wave as a thug, with radically different outcomes because the context channels the drive.
The hypothesis also explains the most revealing finding: the winner effect («winner effect»). Winning a competition —from a tennis match to an election, and also in fans who merely watch their team triumph— raises testosterone; losing lowers it. That is, the relationship is bidirectional: the hormone not only influences dominance behavior, dominance behavior also raises the hormone. This breaks the deterministic reading at its root. If gaining status raises testosterone, then we cannot read a high level as a pure «cause» that precedes behavior; it can be both antecedent and consequence of the person’s own history of dominance. The causal arrow points in both directions at once.

Here is the scientific heart of the entire theory, and it is worth burning into memory so as not to fall into cheap determinism. First: dominance is not violence. Testosterone is associated with the pursuit of status and rank, not with physical aggression itself; violence is only one of its possible expressions, the one that appears when the environment offers no legitimate paths to advancement. Second: correlation is not cause. Studies find associations —high levels alongside more antisocial behavior— but the effect is small and depends on the social context: testosterone is tied much more to aggression in environments of low social class, precariousness or provocation than in stable contexts. Add that a particularly studied risk profile combines high testosterone with low cortisol (little stress hormone, little brake on fear). Third: the winner effect. The relationship is bidirectional —winning raises testosterone, losing lowers it—, so the hormone is both cause and consequence of dominance. Conclusion: hormonal biology tilts probabilistically toward aggressive dominance, but never determines crime nor excuses it.

No laboratory draws the dominance drive with such clarity as fiction, which distills it into impossible bodies. El Emperador, the Emperor of Mortal Kombat, is testosterone turned into cosmology: a being whose only grammar is conquest, who fights not for money or ideas but for absolute rank —«bow before your emperor!»—, the pursuit of status taken to the domination of entire worlds. Dictador, the dictator of Street Fighter, is that drive raised to an imperial project: a tyrant who does not aspire to mark a territory but to subdue the entire world, whose will —fueled by «Psycho Power»— knows no goal other than to impose his absolute rank over everything that exists, dominance aggression turned into conquest and limitless subjugation. And —, the tiger of The Jungle Book, provides the most elegant and literary version: not a thug, but a sovereign who demands submission by right, status as identity —the dominance that does not shout because it does not need to shout—.
The other two show the extremes of the spectrum. Cain Marko, Cain Marko, is the force of dominance made unstoppable: a man who literally cannot be stopped once he charges, the perfect metaphor for the drive that mows down every brake —impulse with no off switch—. And —, the mercenary of Mortal Kombat, is dominance channeled by cold greed: high testosterone and, one would say, low cortisol —no fear, no guilt— in the service of self-interest, the social predator who dominates for sport and for profit. In all five, fiction exaggerates to the point of caricature what science measures timidly: the force that drives one to impose oneself. But it is worth remembering, against fiction itself, that none is a «slave to his hormone»: they all choose how to channel the drive, and that is where their responsibility begins.

// Today’s nuanceA small, social and two-way effect
If behavioral endocrinology has learned anything in recent decades, it is to distrust its own headline. Modern meta-analyses confirm that the association between testosterone and aggression in humans exists, but it is weak —much looser than in rodents— and enormously conditioned by context. Controlled administration studies have shown something even more subtle: giving testosterone to volunteers does not simply make them more aggressive, but increases their sensitivity to status —they become fairer when fairness confers prestige, and harsher when harshness does—. The hormone amplifies the behavior that grants rank in each situation, whatever it may be. That is why the same high level produces an ambitious surgeon or a gang member depending on whether the environment offers legitimate ladders of status or not. Biology loads the dice; society decides on which table they are thrown.
To this is added the lesson of the winner effect, which forces us to read any measurement with caution: a violent inmate may have high testosterone because he leads a life of confrontation and dominance, not necessarily the other way around. And the highest-risk profile —high testosterone plus low cortisol— describes a minority, not men in general. Criminal endocrinology thus matures toward a biosocial model: the hormone is one input among many, modulated by social class, provocation, the culture of honor, opportunities and choices. A factor, not a fate.

The crack in this theory is also its most dangerous temptation: turning correlation into destiny and destiny into excuse. «He just has a lot of testosterone» has served as an alibi both to exculpate aggressors («he couldn’t help it, it’s his nature») and to stigmatize entire populations of men —singularly poor, singularly racialized— as biological time bombs. Both uses are junk science. The real effect is small, correlational, bidirectional and mediated by context; none of that authorizes saying that a hormone «makes» someone kill. Testosterone does not pull triggers or raise fists: at most, in a specific brain and environment, it tilts the probability a little toward dominance responses. Between that tilt and a crime lies everything that makes the human being human: the prefrontal cortex that brakes, values, the available alternatives and, above all, the decision.
The honest version of the theory, therefore, is the one that resists its own determinism. It acknowledges that hormonal biology takes part in aggressive temperament and the pursuit of rank, and at the same time insists that this is a risk factor, not a sentence. Whoever accepts the first without the second repeats the error of all biological criminology: confusing «influences» with «determines», and «determines» with «excuses».
From the hormone of evil to the hormone of status
Criminal endocrinology traveled the opposite path to almost all biological criminology: it was born with a deterministic headline —«testosterone causes violence»— and matured by dismantling it. Wingfield’s challenge hypothesis, imported from ethology, reordered the field by showing that the hormone serves to compete for rank, not to aggress without more; and later meta-analyses reduced its effect in humans to something small and context-dependent. Its mark today is twofold: a biosocial model of aggressive temperament and a permanent ethical warning against hormonal determinism as alibi or as stigma.

Criminal endocrinology matters because it offers the cleanest example of how a biological factor of crime should be read: with seriousness and with limits. Seriousness, because denying that hormones influence temperament would be as unscientific as claiming they dictate everything; the dominance drive is real and deserves study. Limits, because that drive is not a destiny: it is raw material that each person and each society mold. Understanding it has practical consequences —from treatments that reduce testosterone in certain high-risk sexual aggressors to the design of environments that offer non-violent paths to status for young people with the most drive—. But its central lesson is ethical: to explain is not to exculpate. Understanding that Shao Kahn or M. Bison embody a biological drive of dominance does not absolve them of a single crime; it only helps us see what that drive is made of —and to remember that, unlike them, real humans can channel it, brake it and answer for it—.
In the end, testosterone leaves us the same warning as all the biology of crime: it is a probabilistic risk factor, that tilts toward aggressive dominance without ever deciding the outcome. Easy determinism —«the hormone rises, the crime appears»— is as false as it is comfortable. The truth is more uncomfortable and more dignified: the hormone pushes, the context orients and the person chooses. And where there is choice, there is responsibility.
