XYY Chromosome

One Y too many, sold for years as the genetic mark of the violent, unstoppable "supermale". The story of how science and fear invented the "crime chromosome" —and of how the data took it apart—.

During the sixties, criminology believed it had found the holy grail: a crime chromosome. The idea was irresistible for its simplicity —a genetic error that manufactured "supermales" destined for violence— and it filled headlines, courtrooms and movie scripts. It had only one problem: it was false. The XYY chromosome theory is today less an explanation of crime than a lesson about how science and fear can invent a monster.

Humans have 46 chromosomes; the last two decide sex (XX female, XY male). In 1961 the first male with an extra Y (XYY) was described. And in 1965, the geneticist Patricia Jacobs published an explosive finding in Nature: in a maximum-security prison hospital in Scotland, the XYY inmates —tall and considered dangerous— appeared in a proportion far above that of the general population. The reading was immediate and sensationalist: if the Y makes the male and the male is more aggressive, an extra Y must produce a hypermasculine and violent "supermale".

The myth caught fire. The press christened the XYY the "killer chromosome"; it was even attributed —falsely— to the mass murderer Richard Speck, who did not even have it; and in 1968 it was used, unsuccessfully, as a legal defense in a murder trial in France. The seduction was total: it offered what every era seeks, a biological, simple and visible cause of evil —the direct heir of Lombroso's born criminal, now in a lab coat—.

The hypothesis was an elegant and mistaken chain of syllogisms: the Y produces masculinity → masculinity is associated with aggression → therefore an extra Y produces hyperaggression. The problem is that each link oversimplified a far more complex biology. The correlation (more XYY in institutions) was real; the explanation (they are born violent) was pure invention. Confusing one for the other is the oldest —and most dangerous— error of biological criminology.

Cinema and comics have spent a century drawing the XYY villain without knowing it: the colossus destined for violence by pure biology. la Montaña is the pure archetype —a mountain of muscle that only obeys and crushes, without motive or nuance—. Drago, "if he dies, he dies", is the perfect organism turned into a weapon, laboratory biology made fist. Killer Croc is born with a condition that gives him reptile skin and monstrous strength: the man condemned by his own body. Abominación chases that strength like an addiction, until he deforms into the monster he wanted to be. And Dientes de Acero, a giant with steel teeth and indestructible, is the thug as pure physical phenomenon. All share the same lazy premise: the large, anomalous body is the criminal destiny.

When science did its homework properly, the "crime chromosome" fell apart. The decisive study was that of Witkin and colleagues (1976), which tracked more than 4,000 tall men from a Danish cohort. Yes, the XYY men had somewhat more criminal records —but for minor and property offenses, not violent ones—, and that excess was explained above all by two confounding factors: a somewhat lower intelligence (which makes it more likely one gets caught) and a greater height (which makes it more likely an offender is considered dangerous and institutionalized). That is: there was not more violence, there was more capture and labeling. XYY is very rare (~1 in every 1,000 males), the vast majority of those who carry it lead ordinary lives, and practically all violent criminals are normal XY.

Of the original theory almost nothing remains standing: the causal relationship extra Y → violence is essentially refuted. But its history left a moral that is still alive. In the seventies, a Boston program went so far as to screen newborns to detect the XYY and "watch them"; it was canceled for a weighty reason: hanging that label on a baby could turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy, treating him as dangerous until he became dangerous. The XYY case is, for that reason, the textbook example of two traps: confusing correlation with cause and the temptation to turn a gene into a sentence.

The XYY is the textbook case of how a misread piece of data turns into social panic. It came to be invoked —falsely— against the murderer Richard Speck, to be used as a legal defense in a court, and to justify the screening of newborns in Boston, canceled for fear of the self-fulfilling prophecy. Its dismantling left criminology two warnings that remain in force each time "the crime gene" reappears: do not confuse correlation with cause, nor turn a gene into a sentence.

The lesson transcends the XYY itself, because the pattern repeats. Every few decades "the crime gene" reappears under another name —today the MAOA gene, the "warrior gene", already invoked in real trials—, and each time it is worth remembering the XYY: genes load the dice, they do not deal the cards. Biology always acts through the environment, never in its place. The lasting value of this failed theory is not what it explains about crime, but what it teaches about criminology: the rush to find a simple, visible cause external to society has produced more laboratory monsters than born ones. Neither the XYY nor any gene has ever found that genetic supervillain; the most honest thing science can say is that violence has a thousand small causes and no big one.
