Within situational prevention there is a branch that looks at the bricks: environmental design (CPTED) and Oscar Newman's «defensible space», which hold that the architecture of a place —its access points, its lighting, its sightlines, its dependencies— determines how much crime it invites or repels. Honesty by the book: the whole «the FBI cuts the power and the vault opens» bit is a screenplay device —real vaults do not work that way, nor would the FBI cut the power so casually—. Gruber is cinematic hypercompetence, and his perfect plan is as plausible as the skyscraper that houses it. In reality, CPTED is not defeated by lone geniuses: it pays off in the aggregate, reducing common crime building by building, not preventing the unrepeatable heist of a movie villain. And there is a tasty theoretical irony: what sinks his engineering is not other engineering, but the unmodeled guardian —McClane—, which is exactly what routine activities theory predicts. The useful reading keeps the principle (audit your design like an attacker) without believing every office hides a Gruber.
