Doctor Pamela Isley was a brilliant botanist before becoming Poison Ivy. In the most widely known version of her origin, an experiment exposes her to a cocktail of toxins —poisons, plant substances, chemicals— that nearly kill her and transform her from within: her biochemistry is altered, she becomes immune to poisons, and she gains the power to manufacture her own pheromones and toxins. With them she does something disturbing from the standpoint of this theory: she rewrites the chemistry of others, bends their will, turns men into puppets intoxicated by her pheromones. Ivy is doubly chemical: a substance transformed her, and substances are what she uses to dominate others. For the theory of biochemical imbalances, she is the case where chemistry is at once cause and weapon.

The biochemical theory pays special attention to toxins: the lead documented by Needleman and Nevin, mercury, the poisons that alter the brain and behavior. Isley embodies that chapter in two directions. Inward: the toxins of the experiment changed her —her transformation into Ivy is literally a biochemical imbalance carried to the extreme, an altered body chemistry that modifies her identity and steers her behavior toward predatory coldness—. Outward: her pheromones and poisons are the demonstration that behavior can be chemically hijacked. Ivy poses the most dizzying question of this theory: if behavior depends on brain chemistry, what remains of free will when someone manipulates that chemistry? Her pheromones are the fantastical version of a real concern —the substances that alter judgment and will, from alcohol that disinhibits to the drugs used to subdue a victim—. The honest theory uses Ivy to draw a crucial distinction. In the person whose chemistry she hijacks, responsibility genuinely does blur: someone who acts drugged against their will is not fully the owner of their acts, and there chemistry does partly excuse. But in Ivy herself the opposite is true: her toxic transformation explains her coldness, it does not absolve her of choosing to poison others. The same theory, two verdicts: the chemically subdued victim loses responsibility; the agent who decides to subdue them keeps it whole. Distinguishing those two cases —the imbalance imposed and the imbalance wielded— is one of the finest lessons of biochemical criminology.

Isley is a double character and that is why she is so rich. On one hand she is a victim: she did not choose the experiment that poisoned her, the chemistry transformed her against her will, and there is a genuine grievance in her —a woman whose former life some toxins tore away—. On the other she is an executioner: she deliberately uses her toxins to enslave others, to kill, to impose herself. The biochemical theory helps read that double edge without confusing it. That a substance changed her explains her resentment and her coldness; it does not exempt her from the decisions she makes with her new power. Ivy is responsible for whom she poisons, even if she is not for having been poisoned. Her tragedy —what sets her apart from a flat villain— is that mixture: the chemical harm she suffered is real, and even so what she does with the toxins she now manufactures is a choice of hers. The crack with Ivy is confusing her two chemistries. The first temptation is to excuse her entirely: "some toxins transformed her, she is a victim, not guilty." True, she was the victim of a chemical transformation she did not choose —and that deserves acknowledgment—, but it does not follow that her later crimes are excused. Two verdicts for a single chemistry

Ivy matters because she forces the biochemical theory to sharpen its moral rule. Chemistry alters behavior —that is true for Isley and for her victims—, but no single verdict comes out of it. When the imbalance is imposed on you —a drugged, subdued victim with hijacked judgment—, responsibility genuinely diminishes, and real law recognizes it. When you wield the imbalance —Isley choosing whom to poison— you remain responsible, however altered your own chemistry may be. The lesson is that "chemistry influenced it" is not enough as a verdict: you have to ask whether that chemistry was suffered or used, imposed or chosen. That distinction —between the imbalance as alibi and the imbalance as weapon— is what keeps the biochemical theory from becoming a universal excuse. And it points, like the whole archive, to prevention: protecting people from the toxins that alter brains, whether the ones that create an Ivy or the ones she uses to steal wills.
