Norman Osborn has it all: a weapons company, an empire, a fearsome intelligence. What he lacks is scruples, and when a contract is at risk, he does what a man like that would do — he turns himself into his own guinea pig and injects an untested performance serum. The serum delivers and betrays: it multiplies his strength and his mind, and splinters his sanity. From that crack the Green Goblin is born, a violent, megalomaniacal, split personality that sometimes acts without Norman remembering it. Where Frankenstein's Creature asked whether the monster is born or made, Osborn proposes a disturbing third path: the monster that is manufactured, dose by dose, on a brain that already was.

Neurocriminology —the science that seeks the biological roots of crime, whose foremost popularizer is Adrian Raine— is not limited to the brain you are born with. It also studies the brain that changes: how an injury, a tumor, a drug or a chemical imbalance can alter a person's behavior to the point of turning them violent. Its central idea on this side is that much of self-control and empathy depends on specific circuits and substances —the prefrontal cortex that hits the brakes, the serotonin that modulates impulsivity— and that, if those systems are disrupted, behavior is disrupted with them. It is not magic: it is neurochemistry.

The real cases are chilling. Low serotonin levels are consistently associated with impulsive aggression. Anabolic steroids —of which the Goblin's serum is a fantasy— have been linked to irritability and violent outbursts. And injury rules: in 1966, Charles Whitman killed sixteen people from the tower of the University of Texas after writing that something was wrong in his head; the autopsy found a tumor pressing on his amygdala. Cases like these —a tumor that triggers violence, a drug that unleashes it— are the rawest proof of the neurocriminological thesis: sometimes, between the person and the crime, a piece of faulty biology intervenes. The Green Goblin is that idea taken to the comics: a vial that rewrites a mind.

The hijacked brain

The key Osborn illustrates is not «being born with a criminal brain», but having a brain hijacked by a chemical change. It is the same logic as the classic Phineas Gage —the worker whose frontal lobe was pierced by an iron bar in 1848 and who came back unrecognizable, impulsive and disinhibited—, but by pharmacological means: the serum switches off Norman's brakes and amplifies the worst in him. And here Osborn is kin to another villain in this archive, Mr. Hyde: in both, a substance releases a violent self that the «civilized» man kept caged. The difference is that Hyde was a Victorian allegory and the Goblin is almost a toxicology report: the warning that the border between the citizen and the monster can be as thin as a molecule in the wrong place.

What makes Osborn a legally juicy case —and not a simple comic-book madman— is that his story poses, in its purest form, the question neurocriminology brings to the courts: if a substance reprograms your brain, who commits the crime? The Goblin acts; sometimes Norman does not even remember it; is Norman guilty of what the Goblin does? The easy answer —«it was the serum, not him»— collides with two uncomfortable facts the character himself supplies. First: Norman was already ruthless before injecting himself; the serum did not manufacture his cruelty from nothing, it took the brakes off a cruelty that was already there. Second: Norman chose to inject himself, knowing the risk, out of ambition. Biology hijacked his behavior, true — but over a prior character and a free decision. Osborn is not an innocent brain to which things happen: he is a man who bought his own madness and then tried not to answer for it.

Neurocriminology drags along the same danger we already saw with the Creature: becoming an atavism in a white coat, a «your brain made you do it» that sounds like a laboratory and dissolves all responsibility. Osborn shows why it must be resisted. Biology matters —a tumor, a serum, a broken chemistry can push toward violence, and that should weigh in a fair trial—, but to weigh is not to erase. Almost no one with low serotonin or steroids in their blood kills anyone; the biological factor raises the risk, it does not dictate the act. And when a choice is involved —injecting, taking drugs, not seeking treatment while knowing the danger—, responsibility does not evaporate: it shifts to the moment of the decision. «The serum made me do it» is worth as much as «the alcohol made me do it»: it explains, sometimes mitigates, but does not sign a blank check.

There is also a warning against the inverse myth, which the comic feeds: the idea that there exists a substance that turns anyone into an unstoppable monster. The reality is more sober. Drugs and chemical imbalances modulate behaviors —they disinhibit, agitate, worsen— but they do not create villains out of nothing or homicidal supermen; much of the «this drug turns you violent» is media panic rather than pharmacology. Osborn is fiction precisely because he needs a vial to produce, clean and complete, a supervillain. Serious neuroscience describes something grayer and more useful: brains that, pushed by chemistry or injury, lose brakes that can sometimes be restored with treatment.

Treat the brain without absolving the person

Properly understood, this side of neurocriminology is one of the most hopeful: if part of violence arises from a chemistry or an injury, part of violence can be treated —medication for impulsive aggression, attention to head trauma, substance control, prevention—. It is crime seen, in part, as a health problem. But Osborn marks the ethical limit: acknowledging biology cannot mean absolving the person, especially when there was a choice. Sensible justice walks the edge — taking the hijacked brain into account without handing impunity to whoever hijacked their own—. Norman Osborn wants two incompatible things: the power the serum gave him and the innocence of never having injected himself. And that contradiction, more than his green mask, is what makes him such a modern villain.

That is why the Green Goblin ages well despite his pumpkin-and-glider aesthetic: beneath the costume beats a 21st-century dilemma. We live surrounded by substances that change our brains and by a science that is beginning to read, in a scan or a blood test, why someone snapped. Osborn forces us to hold at once two truths we would prefer to keep apart: that biology can push the hand, and that the hand still belongs to someone. The monster does not always come from outside, nor is it born within. Sometimes, like Norman, you inject it into yourself — and then pretend it was not you holding the needle.
