The premise of Brightburn (2019) is diabolically simple: take the Superman story —a ship falling from the sky, a baby, kindly farmers who adopt and raise him with love— and change the ending. Brandon Breyer does not become a hero. As he reaches puberty, he "awakens" to his alien nature and decides, just like that, to take the world. His parents did everything right and it made no difference. The film is the nature vs nurture experiment in its most terrifying form: what if upbringing, however perfect, were not enough?

Without knowing it, Brightburn reproduces the design of the adoption studies, the flagship tool of behavioral genetics. The logic is the same: separate the parents who provide the genes (here, unknown aliens) from those who provide the home (the Breyers). If the adoptee resembles their biological origin more than their upbringing, heredity matters. In Mednick's Danish cohort (1984), the criminality of adoptees did indeed lean toward their biological parents.

Brandon is that correlation taken to the absolute: biology does not just matter, it steamrolls. The Breyers' loving upbringing is completely powerless against the "program" he carried inside. // The flaw"Some are born superior": the darkest echo

The flaw in Brightburn is the most dangerous in the theory: the idea that there exist innately superior or irredeemable beings, different in their essence. Stripped of superpowers, that is the fantasy that fed eugenics —classifying humans by their "material" and acting accordingly—. When a story asserts that someone's nature makes them untouchable by education, love or law, it is one step from asserting that certain people are surplus. Science denies it: there are no "superiors" nor sealed "seeds", only predispositions that life switches on or off.

And the fatalistic reading has a practical cost. If we believe that upbringing "is not enough", we stop investing in the one thing the evidence supports: environments. Brightburn is entertainment that plays on our fear that effort is useless; real behavioral genetics says the opposite —that the environment is, almost always, the variable we can actually play with—. Explaining why a child "of difficult origin" ends up badly does not require surrender; it demands looking at the trigger that could have been switched off.

Not surrendering to "nature"

Brandon matters as a warning against genetic fatalism. If the message we take away is "some people are born lost and there is nothing to be done", we will make exactly the worst decisions: abandoning instead of intervening, punishing instead of preventing. The honest conclusion of the theory is the opposite and more demanding one: neither the best home guarantees a hero, nor the worst inheritance condemns to a monster. Between nature and nurture there is no winner; there is a margin —and that margin is where the work happens—.
